2025 Subaru Outback vs. The Competition

2025 Subaru Outback vs. the Competition

The new Subaru Outback offers an unbeatable blend of SUV utility and a car-like ride. It's technically a wagon, but its high ground clearance and spaciousness compare favorably to SUVs. The new Toyota 4Runner and the new Mazda CX-50 are also roomy, well-equipped vehicles, but they can't beat the overall quality and performance of the Outback. Hassett Subaru provides the following comparisons to explain why.

Performance

Acceleration

The new Subaru Outback is available with your choice of two four-cylinder engines: a 182-horsepower motor or a turbocharged 260-horsepower engine. When equipped with the stronger optional motor, the Outback can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in around six seconds. The new Toyota 4Runner offers only one engine, a 270-horsepower V6. However, since it's a larger vehicle than the Outback, it needs 7.7 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph. The new Mazda CX-50 has two available engines, but its brawniest motor only generates 256 horsepower. The CX-50 takes seven seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill.

Off-Road Readiness

The new Subaru Outback comes standard with Symmetrical all-wheel drive for enhanced traction on challenging terrain. Subaru Outback Wilderness models have 9.5 inches of ground clearance, a Dual-Function X-Mode traction control system, and 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires for impressive off-road proficiency. The new Toyota 4Runner comes standard with rear-wheel drive, and you must pay more to add four-wheel drive. The new Mazda CX-50 has standard all-wheel drive, but it only has up to 8.6 inches of ground clearance.

Fuel Economy

Widely varying gas prices make it vital to drive a vehicle that won't burn too much fuel. The new Subaru Outback earns a class-leading 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway when properly equipped. The new Toyota 4Runner only returns 16 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. The new Mazda CX-50 earns just 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway in its most efficient configuration.

Interior

Passenger & Cargo Space

You'll want all your passengers to feel comfortable and relaxed on road trips, and the Subaru Outback has spacious accommodations. Backseat riders enjoy 39.5 inches of rear legroom. The Outback also has plenty of cargo space to store your camping gear, with 75.6 cubic feet of room when the back row of seats is folded down. The new Toyota 4Runner has a little more cargo space than the Outback, but only 39.2 inches of rear legroom. The new Mazda CX-50 maxes out at 56.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

Infotainment Tech

An easy-to-use, feature-rich infotainment system is a must for long voyages. The new Subaru Outback offers two infotainment setups, including an 11.6-inch touchscreen system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new Toyota 4Runner's only touchscreen is just 8 inches long. The new Mazda CX-50's lone infotainment display is only 10.25 inches long.

Safety

Your safety is one of the most crucial considerations when buying an SUV or wagon, and every new Subaru Outback trim comes with five driver-assistance features from the EyeSight® Driver Assist package. This includes automatic high-beam headlights for improved visibility at night. The new Toyota 4Runner only has four standard advanced active safety features and automatic high beams are not included. The new Mazda CX-50 has similar driver aids to the Outback, but again, it doesn't come with automatic high-beam headlights.
