Subaru Forester vs. Subaru Forester Hybrid: Which New Subaru Forester is Right for You?

The Subaru Forester is an exceptionally well-rounded compact crossover that offers comfortable and spacious accommodations, ample cargo capacity, and many appealing features. Plus, thanks to features like standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and tall ground clearance, it delivers confident performance beyond the asphalt, especially in Wilderness form.

The Subaru Forester gets even better for the 2025 model year, kicking off its sixth generation with a ruggedly handsome design refresh, a quieter, more refined interior, and upgraded technology, including an available 11.6-inch touchscreen and a 360-degree camera system. It also introduces a new Subaru Forester Hybrid variant for drivers seeking improved efficiency. Shoppers from Merrick to Amityville can buy or lease the new Subaru Forester at Hassett Subaru in Wantagh. Here's a quick look at some of the highlights.

Performance

The Subaru Forester is powered by a 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER® four-cylinder engine that generates 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. It achieves an EPA-estimated 29 MPG combined (26 city/33 highway) with 17-inch and 18-inch wheels or 28 MPG (25 city/32 highway) with 19-inch wheels. The adventure-ready Wilderness trim has an EPA rating of 26 MPG (25 city/28 highway).1

The Subaru Forester Hybrid augments the standard engine with an electric motor, boosting performance to 194 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. It also improves fuel economy, achieving an EPA-rated 35 MPG combined (35 city/34 highway).1

The Forester and Forester Hybrid can both tow up to 1,500 pounds. However, the Wilderness trim (gas-only) increases that rating to 3,000 pounds.

Wilderness

While both Forester variants have similar trim rosters, only the gas-powered version is available in Wilderness form. This rugged trim level further amplifies the Forester's capability beyond the asphalt with terrain-tuned suspension, taller ground clearance, and dual-function X-MODE®. It also includes Yokohama all-terrain tires, a 180-degree front camera, and reinforced roof rails (700-pound stationary load limit) that are ideal for a rooftop tent.

Interior

The Subaru Forester and Forester Hybrid both offer an open and accommodating cabin that's a nice place to pass the miles. The interior features nicely cushioned and supportive seats, modern design details, and ample headroom and legroom for occupants in either row. Most trims have a 27.5 cubic-foot cargo area for your luggage or adventure gear. When your Massapequa outings require more storage, you can fold the rear seats to access 69.1 cubic feet. However, the gas-powered Forester has a base model without a panoramic sunroof, which expands cargo capacity to 28.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 74.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The Subaru Forester is nicely equipped with many comforts and conveniences. Some gas-powered trims offer available packages with contents that the Hybrid counterpart includes as standard equipment. Depending on the configuration, you can upgrade your Bellmore drives with features like:

  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Power liftgate
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated rear seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Driver-position memory
  • Leather upholstery

Infotainment and Safety Technology

The Subaru Forester's base trim (gas only) has a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, providing convenient access to smartphone features like hands-free calls and messages, Google or Apple Maps, music, streaming media, and your virtual assistant. All higher tiers boast an 11.6-inch touchscreen, plus wireless smartphone integration and a wireless charging pad.

A customizable 12.3-inch digital instrument panel is exclusive to the 2025 Forester Hybrid, making it easier to monitor various driving, vehicle, and navigation information while keeping your eyes on the road.

The 2025 Subaru Forester supports your attentive driving with a comprehensive array of advanced driver aids, including standard technologies like:

  • Pre-Collision Braking and Throttle Management
  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane-Centering
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • High Beam Assist

The Subaru Forester Hybrid also comes standard with Blind-Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. These technologies are optional in the gas-powered Subaru Forester Premium.
