How to Check Your Subaru’s Oil

Your oil is one of the most essential components in your vehicle. Ensuring that your oil level is at optimum levels, and that it is clean, is vital to the health of your engine and your Subaru vehicle’s longevity.

How do you check your oil for potential issues, though?

Checking your oil is a very simple process that only requires a minute or two of your time.

  1. Firstly, you should make sure your car is parked on level ground. If your car is uneven it can mess with the reading.
  2. Prop your hood open and make sure it is stable before leaning in.
  3. Find your dipstick. It is usually bright colored and labeled, so it should be easy to find.
  4. Take the dipstick out and wipe it down with a rag.
  5. Put the dipstick back in the engine – make sure it goes all the way in!
  6. Pull the dipstick out one more time. Make sure not to turn the stick upside down!
  7. Take a closer look – the dipstick has two distinct marks on the bottom which allows you to read your oil level. Check to see where the dry section and the oily section meet. If the mark is between them, then your oil is at optimum levels!

If your oil is not in between these marks, though, or if you notice your oil is discolored and dirty, you could need an oil change.
